The average Finn eats about 62.5 kg (137.8 pounds) of potatoes a year!
The Finnish word for potato, peruna, comes from the Swedish word päron, which actually means ”pear”. This is because potatoes used to be called ”ground-pears” in Swedish. Besides ground-pears, potatoes have also been regarded as ground-apples. The French word 'pomme de terre' as well as the Dutch 'aardappel' mean ”ground-apple”.
In Finland the potato has been around since the late 1720s, when they were brought to Fagervik Manor in Inkoo by German sheet metal workers.
